Mariah Carey is one of the most influential singers in our modern generation. She has transcended a couple of generations and will continue to do so decades to come. The Carey family experienced plenty of personal struggles within their community becasue of their ethnicity. Mariah's name came from the 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon. There was a song called "They Call The Wind Maria" that obviously caught the fancy of Mariah's mother.
On her way to becoming famous, Mariah Carey worked as a waitress for various restaurants. She could never keep a job. She would get fired from each one of these restaurants in two-week intervals. Mariah stayed with her ambitions to becoming a famous singer someday, working on her music late nights in hopes of completing a demo that could be passed on to record executives.

Each time Mariah attempted to pass her music to labels, they would say no. She heard no quite often. Later in her pursuance, she was introduced to rising pop singer Brenda K. Starr. Mariah Carey accompanied starr to a record executives gala. During the event, Carey handed her demo to Columbia Records head, Tommy Mottola. He listened to her demo on the ride back home. He was blown away after only listening to two of her tracks. However, he couldn't find Mariah for a couple of weeks until he was finally able to contact her through Starr's management.
